Interesting Reads

let your employees work from home

4/8/2022

It was an interesting start to the morning.  My Google news feed sent me this article:

Fed-up managers declare WFH is over, as 77% say they’d fire you or cut your pay for not coming back to the office

Then as I scrolled down, I was given this to chew on:

Gen Z & Millennials Would Rather Be Unemployed Than Unhappy at Work

So it looks like we're going to be approaching some showdowns, sooner rather than later.

Many moons ago, when I was a young accountant still working out my reconciliation skills, I worked for a large computer company.  My co-workers were lovely people, but the amount of time the we all wasted standing around chit-chatting about nothing, wasn't lost on me.  There was no point not wasting that time though, because if all of your work was completed, you couldn't leave the office anyways.  In fact, we were told to "just look busy" if we had nothing to do.

I had responsibilities at home so I can't tell you how frustrating it was to be made to sit for several hours, play typing, instead of being able to use that time productively for my own life.

It was that, combined with 2 hours a day commuting, that pushed me into an entrepreneurial lifestyle.  This has allowed me to manage my hours in a way that bests suits my lifestyle.

Whenever anyone tries to claim that people who work from home will slack without a manager hanging over their head, I ask them "Why, is that what you would do?"

Humans are hardwired to be productive.  Study after study has shown that working from home actually increases productivity.  How much better are you at the start of the day if you haven't just fought through morning traffic hell?  How much more work gets done when you're not distracted by the office gossip of the day?

My advice for any employer in 2022 is to save yourself the money on office rent, do some good for the environment, and keep your employees happy and productive.  Let them work from home.

I'm Over Facebook

4/1/2022

In case you didn't hear, Facebook has been using a right-wing media group to attack Tik-Tok surreptitiously.  Given the information that's been coming to light over the last few years in regards to Facebook's policies, it's not surprising.

Instead of attacking the competition, why not try to be better than them?

Anyone who has tried to run a business on Facebook can tell you how it's becoming more and more frustrating every passing month.  The ever changing algorithm blocks you from developing an organic audience.  You can have thousands of followers but you'll be lucky if your posts get in front of 70 people without paying for it.

But what are you paying for?  They do nothing about fake/spam accounts.  Why? So they can keep their audience numbers inflated and charge more.

Facebook recorded a $30 billion profit in 2020. Yet, as anyone who uses the platform can tell you, provides no actual human customer support for anything.  I had a client tell a customer "I'll cut you a deal" on a post and was banned for 24 hours because of it.  It was ridiculous, it interfered with his business, and there was absolutely no recourse.

Beyond all that, it's become such a negative space.  When I do jump on, I do a quick scroll and do my best to never read the comments.  It's become a bastion for angry, argumentative people.  Unless there are some serious changes to operating procedures, I doubt Facebook will be a real player in social media by 2025.

Going strong at 95

3/31/2022

This is what we're talking about when we're talking about building a life you don't want to retire from.

Nestor Kozey has been moving whole houses for 72 years, and sees no reason to slow down.  Why should he?  He's doing something he enjoys every day.

It's the only way to live.

From The CBC:

At 95, Nestor Kozey Still Moves Whole Houses

Glitch in CRA Tax Filing

3/29/2022

According to the Financial Post there have been reports that CRA's autofill feature hasn't been adding all of the tax slips, meaning that some people may have under-reported income.

Technology is wonderful, but glitches happen.  That's why we always double check before we hit file.

It's not a huge deal though.  If you find you missed a slip while filing, just add it and refile.

Or contact 616 Executive and we'll take care of it for you.

What to do when cra calls

3/27/2022

'You're busy, you're running all day and you haven't had time to look at your accounting.  You think you have HST returns to file, but you're not sure.  You're pretty certain you should have filed a corporate tax return by now, but you're not sure.

Then the phone rings, and it's Maria from the CRA, letting you know that they would appreciate it if you could get your things together....soon.

Don't panic.  This is actually a good thing.  CRA is very easy to work with. They're normal, everyday Canadians. They're not out to destroy you. They just want you filed, and then they'll work out payment plans with you.

That's where 616 Executive steps in.  We'll get your numbers up to date, reconciled and everything filed.  We can even communicate with CRA on your behalf.

Getting all this done will get this off your mind, and take that stress away.

Get in touch with us today and we'll grab the bull by the horns and get everything caught up and cleaned up, so you can get back to your business.
